St Vincent’s Hospital is one of Australia’s most iconic hospitals, operating for over 150 years. The hospital even has a nuclear medicine department as one of its specialist units, where radioactive substances are used to diagnose, manage and treat diseases. The rooms in the nuclear medicine area of St Vincent’s hospital have been designed to create a relaxed and comfortable place to be treated as a patient.
Working with nuclear medicine can be potentially hazardous. Nuclear medicine, including PET, is the speciality of medicine which employs unsealed sources of radionuclide (radiopharmaceuticals or tracers) for diagnosis and therapy. Exposure to even a small amount of radiation, no matter how small, can carry a small amount of risk from unwanted health effects. To ensure the medical staff work in a safe environment and to give them full protection against these potential hazards, Rapid Electrical was called in to implement the best electrical services Sydney has to offer.
To ensure the safety of patients and medical staff, our expert team at Rapid Electrical arranged the following:
- The rooms meet the 3003 Australian standards for patient areas (Body and Cardiac)
- National Association of Testing Authorities certification was provided
- Double pole isolation switches
- 10m Amp residual current devices to protect the power outlets
- Mechanical protection for the incoming Sub Circuits
We also installed a Cat6A structure communication System. This offered the hospital a faster and more efficient communication system operating up to 10gb increasing the band width dramatically. Cat6A supports bandwidth frequencies of up to 500 MHz, twice the amount of Cat6 cables.
When done correctly, with the right safety measures, nuclear medicine procedures can be extremely safe. Our team at Rapid was extremely proud to work on such an important electrical system, which will provide ongoing help and safety to staff and patients within the nuclear medicine department at St Vincent’s.
