The Aboriginal Medical Service (AMS) in Redfern was established in 1971 and was the first Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service in Australia. The AMS pioneered the concept of Aboriginal Community controlled healthcare and was founded as a co-operative to provide healthcare services to the local Aboriginal Community around Redfern. The AMS recently moved into a new building and needed help from our experts at Rapid Electrical to get them up and running.

The building was an old telephone exchange that was converted into a medical centre. It was a heritage building, so we had to install the requirements and it was very difficult to maintain the heritage infrastructure. We designed and installed the electrical system to comply with the BPA medical standards. We installed a customised nurse call alert system, upgraded the lighting to ensure it met the medical standards and we also upgraded the electrical power system.

We were chosen to work on the project by the builders, Renascent Builders. We had never worked with this builder before, however, we were selected from a tender process due to our experience in commercial medical as well as our design capabilities.

Effective electrical design includes planning, creating, testing and supervising the development and installation of electrical equipment. This includes lighting equipment, power systems, power distribution, fire and life safety systems, voice/data communications infrastructure – and when it comes to medical facilities – there is specific infrastructure that needs to be implemented.
